MY STORY

House of Betula is a boutique interior design studio crafting timeless, layered and restorative homes that tell your story, through the considered layering of natural textures, soft colour palettes and cohesive details. Founder Gemma Pope brings a thoughtful and intuitive approach to every project backed by extensive industry experience, an interior architectural education and an innate understanding of what makes a house a home.

Working across all residential interiors, the bespoke design services include virtual e-design packages, colour consultancy, full-service interior design and developer projects.

Each space is thoughtfully designed to bring warmth and a sense of collected luxury to your home, creating interiors that feel emotionally grounding, layered with meaning and supportive of the rhythm of everyday life - away from the noise of busy and overwhelming trend led design.

“I have spent the past fourteen years working in high-end residential interior design, with leading studios in London and Bristol. Over time, this has shaped a thoughtful and intuitive approach to design, that balances creativity with functionality, designing interiors that are not only beautiful, but practical and enduring.

With a degree in BA(Hons) in Interior Architecture, my approach is grounded in a technical understanding of space, flow and how a home is truly lived in.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to create interiors for luxury property developers, house builders and private clients from around the world. My work has spanned private homes, show homes, home staging, holiday properties and interior styling, giving me a broad and well-rounded understanding of the way a space can support daily life.

My work has also been recognised with multiple industry awards, including Best Residential Apartment and Best Show Home at the International Property Awards.

Relocating from London back to the calmer pace of the West Country, alongside the arrival of my wonderful son, brought with it a natural shift and a moment of pause, reflection and a desire to create something more personal. House of Betula was born from this moment. A studio that brings together everything I have learned throughout my career, shaped by a more considered, intentional way of living.

Building something of my own has allowed me to create a life and business that feels both grounded and fulfilling. One that honours my work as an Interior Designer, while embracing the balance of motherhood.

“Throughout my time working within several established design studios , I had the opportunity to work on some truly special projects. A few highlights include:

  • Designing a duplex penthouse in West London with panoramic views across London’s skyline

  • Furnishing ten luxury studio suites at the Mandarin Oriental Residences in Mayfair, London.

  • Leading the design of 100 holiday lodges for a boutique coastal retreat in Cornwall.

  • Home staging many homes from exclusive Central London postcodes to beautiful countryside homes around the home counties.”

elegant, grounding & strong

Betula

“In my garden stand two beautiful birch trees, their light, delicate branches softly draping overhead and framing the view back to the house. From the moment I first saw them, I felt an immediate connection. They were the reason I fell in love with the garden, and ultimately, the reason we chose to make this house our home- a 1930s property in a village outside Bristol, ready to be thoughtfully renovated.

House of Betula takes its name from these trees. Betula, the Latin name for birch, reflects the calm, grounding presence that nature brings to a space. Birch trees are quietly elegant, symbolising natural beauty, resilience and renewal.

These qualities underpin the philosophy of my studio: to create spaces that feel refined yet deeply restorative, where a sense of sanctuary is achieved through thoughtful, enduring design.”
